Gian Carlo Menotti (July 7,
1911 - February 1, 2007) was one of the most popular and prolific
opera composers and librettists of his time, winning two Pulitzer
prizes for The Consul and The Saint of
Bleecker Street. Born
in Italy, he studied at the Curtis Institute of Music and became
one of the most loved American composers. His 25 operas include
the Christmas classic Amahl and the Night
Visitors, which was
commissioned by NBC-TV in 1951 and has become the most frequently-performed
opera in the United States, as well as the long-running Broadway
hits, The Medium, The Telephone, and The
Consul. The New York
Times applauded Menotti’s “human drama and first
rate theatre…written from the heart with a blazing sincerity.” His
humorous, touching, and dramatic works are accessible and appealing
to a wide audience…whether you are new to opera, a long
time devotee, or someone who just loves theater.

RAVE REVIEWS ABOUT GIAN CARLO
MENOTTI
“Menotti was one
of the most prolific and theatrically talented American opera
composers of the last century. He has left an indelible mark
on American music.” -
William Mason, General Director, Lyric Opera of Chicago
"Gian
Carlo Menotti introduced a generation of Americans to opera.
He was one of America’s great composers.” – Peter
Gelb, General Manager, Metropolitan Opera
“Menotti has
made out of plays, operas, and out of operas, plays. It is
dramatic music, emphatic in action as well as feeling, and
in essence song, which is what opera must be. No other American
composer has shown the inborn talent that Mr. Menotti, Italian
by descent, unquestionably possesses for the lyric theater.” -
